yester year.

Yesterday, I celebrated four crazy, wonderful years of being married to this amazing man. Yup. Four. (that’s a semi long-short time guys). We went to the gym, got ourselves some delicious wings, exchanged cards and watched a movie. Yes we are so glamorous. Don’t worry, we’re planning a real celebration later. :)

Marriage has been so wonderful, but so incredibly hard at the same time. Marriage is hard. Is anyone hearing this for the first time? Because seriously people, marriage is hard. Marriage makes you more vulnerable than anything else you could ever do. It’s not always fun, and it can often be very painful. You’re likely to encounter severe disappointments, and there are going to be times when you feel very, very alone. If I’m saying it than you know that it must be true, because folks,  I married Justin, and he is just about as close to perfect as a man can be.

So why do we get married if it’s so terrible and painful? Because my friends, it is worth it. It’s like living in a world where you only see in grayscale; life is still beautiful and rich, and extremely elegant and refined in its own way. Things are simpler and clearer, but as soon as you see in color, and really dedicate yourself to seeing the world in a new way, you realize all you’ve been missing. You learn new things about yourself, and learn how to love and care for someone else. You realize new potential and experience new things, and if you play your cards right, you will get to do it with your best friend.

Marriage is not always easy or fun. There have been times when I’ve worried about our relationship, and wondered if one or both of us were crazy. There have been times when I’ve thought we could never achieve this amazing, difficult thing which is marriage. But as I’ve tried to see and understand you as our Father in Heaven does, I’ve felt a deep, unconditional love for you. And not once in four years, have I ever regretted saying “I do”.

Justin Scott, you are my best friend in the whole wide world, and I love you with all my heart.

What a great post. My husband and I were married four years in February and I agree with what you have written, totally. Marriage IS hard - but it is also amazing and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Happy anniversary!
